A new disability awareness card will help individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities and/or a mental health disorder communicate with police officers in stressful situations.
On January 1, 2017, the new legislation went into effect and aims to ease any communication barriers that might exist in times of high-stress, such as getting pulled over by an officer. The hope is that this card will help alleviate situations before it escalates due to an individual being unresponsive, agitated, or showing signs of nonconforming. The front of the card explains that the individual has a disability, while the back provides emergency contact information for the office to call to provide assistance on how to handle the situation.

The Painted Turtle is a new art studio and program of CTF ILLINOIS where individuals with diverse disabilities participate in art therapy, learn new techniques and skills, and have the opportunity to sell their work to the community. 100% of the profits go right back to the artists! In addition to serving as a gallery and art studio, The Painted Turtle often has events open to the community. Check back here for upcoming events!

Illinois became an Employment First State when legislation was signed in July of 2013. To comply with that law and a following Executive Order in June 2014, state agencies prepared an initial Strategic Plan for how policies and procedures will need to change.
Illinois Govenor Pat Quinn signed into law HB3826, which allows miniature horses to be used as service animals in schools. The animals are already classified as service animals by the Americans with Disability Act. The law takes immediate effect.
