New Disability Awareness Card Helps Individuals Communicate with Police in Stressful Situations

A new disability awareness card will help individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities and/or a mental health disorder communicate with police officers in stressful situations.

On January 1, 2017, the new legislation went into effect and aims to ease any communication barriers that might exist in times of high-stress, such as getting pulled over by an officer. The hope is that this card will help alleviate situations before it escalates due to an individual being unresponsive, agitated, or showing signs of nonconforming. The front of the card explains that the individual has a disability, while the back provides emergency contact information for the office to call to provide assistance on how to handle the situation.

Cinco de Mile 5K

Lace up your shoes and get ready for our Cinco de Mile 5K race on May 5, 2018! Our 3.1 mile run will start and end at Breidert Green Park. 100% of proceeds will be used for programs and services for the individuals we serve.

Special Events at The Painted Turtle

The Painted Turtle is a new art studio and program of CTF ILLINOIS where individuals with diverse disabilities participate in art therapy, learn new techniques and skills, and have the opportunity to sell their work to the community. 100% of the profits go right back to the artists! In addition to serving as a gallery and art studio, The Painted Turtle often has events open to the community. Check back here for upcoming events!

Family Painting Night

Date: Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Time: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Location: 17459 Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park, IL 60477

Cost: $15 per person. Cash only, please.

Give your kids a fun night out while giving back to the community! At Family Night, each person can paint their own 8×10 canvas: choose from one of our pre-drawn canvasses or start from scratch! Painted Turtle staff can assist with painting as well. All proceeds from this event will support our programming for artists with disabilities.

Mom and Me Painting Event 

Date: Friday, May 11, 2018

Time: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Location: 17459 Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park, IL 60477

Cost: $50 per pair

Honor Mother’s Day by creating a one-of-a-kind gift with your mother, child, or other loved one! Each pair will paint their own 12×12 canvas provided by The Painted Turtle, cementing their special bond while supporting the talented artists of The Painted Turtle.

Illinois Gov. Quinn Signs HB3826

Illinois Govenor Pat Quinn signed into law HB3826, which allows miniature horses to be used as service animals in schools. The animals are already classified as service animals by the Americans with Disability Act. The law takes immediate effect.
