Individuals find their Voice through Creating
For the past two years, Joan Nowak has been leading a group of consumers in learning new skills to create various handmade products on Wednesday mornings. The group creates baskets, ornaments, wreaths, and other handmade goods and is tailored to fit all individuals’ skill levels. Along with Joan, SCS staff member Sarah Jagoda as well as volunteers Mimi and Seldon Gordon and Diane Capelli assist with the needs of the group. The group is open to any SCS consumer who wishes to participate in order to develop their skills and technique or to learn how to create a new product.
Most recently, Joan led her group in creating Wizard of Oz-inspired wreaths in order to sell them at Tinley Park’s Wizard of Oz Festival. Joan and the other dedicated volunteers are looking forward to the chance to bring more handmade products to future arts and craft shows throughout the area. For Joan, the other volunteers, and the consumers, it is important to be involved in craft fairs and events because it gives the public an opportunity to get to know SCS and it gives consumers a chance to both sell their products and become more involved in the community. The group is currently accepting monetary donations as well as in-kind donations of various supplies or craft/fabric store gift cards. For information on how you can help support the group, please email Joan Nowak at firstname.lastname@example.org or call SCS directly at (708)429-1260.
