Quilts, Pillows, Wreaths, and Painting
Individuals at SCS have been learning how to paint, quilt, sew, make pillows, and hone in on other skills for more than four years now thanks to Lynn Burke, who leads a team of volunteers on Wednesdays and Thursdays for her Fine Arts Group. The group meets twice a week and is available to all individuals at SCS and open to any and all skill levels. Individuals work on a variety of projects: William was learning how to sew, while volunteer Doris taught Jennifer to knit, and Gabby and Dawn worked on their paintings.
While some of the individuals’ works are hanging up throughout their space at SCS, much of the art is also on display in the People’s Art Exhibit at the State Museum in Lockport. Their work, which also includes pillows and quilts, has also been showcased at various events, such as Orland Park’s Fine Arts Program and the SCS Pancake Breakfast. Currently, Lynn and the group are searching for future opportunities and events where the individuals’ creations can be showcased and available for sale to the community.
Lynn enjoys providing her time to the group because it lets the clients have more individualized attention and one-on-one time in the smaller group setting. She loves watching them learn new skills together and commends their hard work and talent. To find out how you can help support the group or to speak with someone about having the group’s work showcased at an upcoming event, please email Lynn Burke at firstname.lastname@example.org or call SCS directly at (708)429-1260.
